Ludden Library

The Laramie County Community College Ludden Library and Learning Commons is undergoing renovations starting this spring that is part of the LCCC masterplan to create a physically transformed campus.

The library is open to students as well as the public and is one of the most heavily used places on campus.

“We don’t have enough space for all of the students and we don’t have a quiet area,” associate dean of Ludden Library and Learning Commons, Maura Hadaway said. “Our Student Success Center and Writing and Communications Center are also crammed into small places.”

Included in this space will be an addition of a bigger quiet space, a family study area, innovation space with more flexible technology, and a space for a history and heritage area. The history and heritage space will show the history of the college, as well as include travelling exhibits, presentations and small group activities.

There will also be fewer books as a lot will now be offered electronically. The Learning Commons will include the Writing and Communication Center as well as the Student Success Center. This area will include tutoring needs,
resources, and the programs and outreach that the tutoring center offers. This project has a budget of $6.2 million and the Legislature provided $2.5 million in 2017. The rest of the project will be funded with maintenance money and one mil funds. The LCCC Foundation also raised $2.6 million.

During renovations, the library will be located in the College Community Center room 128 and the Learning Commons will be in CCC 138.

Governor Mead Selects New Secretary of State

Governor Matt Mead has chosen Edward Buchanan to fill the Secretary of State vacancy. Buchanan was one of three candidates the Wyoming Republican Party Central Committee sent to Governor Mead to replace Ed Murray who resigned from office on February 9th.

Wyoming has a statutory process which governs vacancies in elected offices. In the case of the Secretary of State, application is made to the central committee of the political party which the last incumbent represented at the time of election – in this case the Republican Party. The Republican Central Committee selects three names. The Governor, then, interviews the three candidates and chooses among them.

Governor Mead interviewed the three candidates on Tuesday.

“I have received input from people across the state. I have weighed that input in my evaluations and I selected Ed Buchanan,” said Governor Mead. “I was particularly impressed that Ed ran for this Office in the last election. He understands state government having served in the Legislature where he rose through the ranks to serve as Speaker of the House. He is a respected attorney and prosecutor. In the course of his career, he has had many interactions with the office of Secretary of State. I have admiration for his military career. Ed is committed to Wyoming and to the responsibilities of the Office,” Mead said.

The Central Committee also sent Governor Mead the names of Darin Smith an attorney from Cheyenne and Richard George a farmer from Park County.

“I appreciate Darin and Richard. They were each committed to serve and committed to Wyoming,” said Governor Mead.

“It is an honor and privilege to be selected for this office by the Central Committee and Governor Mead. I pledge my best efforts to the State of Wyoming and her citizens. I am blessed and honored to serve,” said Buchanan.

West Edge Collective Ground Breaking

West Edge Collective Breaks Ground at 709 W. Lincolnway

West Edge CollectiveState of WyomingCity of CheyenneVFLA, Reiman Corp, Four Quarters Excavating and Jonah Bank collectively working toward the one goal of providing a new location for West Edge Collective.

West Edge Collective’s newest venture has promise of being one of the most creative work spaces in Wyoming. Incorporating repurposed steel bridge beams from various bridges in Wyoming and used 40’ shipping containers immediately places the design in the category of forward thinking. However, West Edge owns the category of “cool” with a centerpiece lighting fixture made from a 1964 Chevy Corvair van (aka “The Vandelier”).

Chad Willett cast a great vision of how this new venture will greatly aid to bridge Cheyenne’s creative and tech companies. Currently we are hearing from every entity, “We need to diversify.” This is the current mantra of the State, City and even the 64th Legislature. It’s not only government levels who are saying this but also our business community. Today, while others are still talking, West Edge Collective is moving dirt and making it happen.

Walkout

Laramie County School District 1 officials will allow Walkout.

As communities across the nation come to grips with the tragedy that occurred in Parkland, Florida, word of a National School Walkout day on March 14 has surfaced. Laramie County School District 1 officials will allow high school students to participate in student-led activities for a duration of 17 minutes inside of school. The activities are site-based and determined by student leaders with staff oversight. Student participation is optional. During the week leading to this event, students will be exposed to instructional units aligned with both the district and state approved social studies standards.

The primary goal is to keep students safe. The theme of the culminating event is school safety, not any particular political agenda. The event is to promote non-violence in schools and is not intended for administrators to support pro- or anti-gun positions. The primary objective is to help students responsibly find a voice within a safe environment, whatever their positions may be.

Kids Deserve Dads

Father wants more time with his son and believes in what he is fighting for.

Zac Martin has been spending most of his time lobbying for two specific bills this legislative session. His son Elijah, 13 months old, is his reason for the passion he is putting into these two bills. Both of them, if passed, will change the way custodial parents and non-custodial parents interact. One of them is SENATE FILE NO. SF0020,  looking at custody in the best interest of the children. The other bill is HOUSE BILL NO. HB0017 , which looks at child support amendments. Each of these bills focuses on two different issues that Zac has felt were important for dads (and moms) in state of Wyoming, when the parents are no longer together.

Zac is the Wyoming State Representative for the National Parents Organization. This has allowed him to connect with other parents throughout the state and has helped him create a network of parents fighting everyday to be able to see their children. The connection he has made has also motivated him to create a group, Kids Deserve Dads, that will be support and a resource for all parents.

Status of both bills as of Friday, March 2, 2018:
HB0017 will move to Senate
SF0020 passed the 2nd reading

On March 6th, 2018, at approximately 1:30 am, an individual gained entrance to the Governor’s residence, activated a fire alarm, then hid inside the house.  Firefighters and law enforcement from the Cheyenne Police Department, Laramie County Sheriff’s Office and Wyoming Highway Patrol responded.  The subject, identified as Antonie Lewis, was quickly discovered, and was taken into custody without incident.  Mr. Lewis was booked into the Laramie County Detention facility, and will be charged with aggravated burglary and criminal entry.  Neither the Governor, nor his family was harmed in the incident.

Governor Mead expressed his gratitude for the Fire Department and law enforcement response.

There will be a noticeable, increased level of security in and around the Governor’s residence for the foreseeable future.  The Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) has been asked to assist in this investigation.

“307” day was yesterday, March 7th. In celebration many Wyoming-ites showed their pride.

The Wyoming State Tourism office launched a “Thats WY” slogan last year, to focus on the richness of what the state has to offer. In fact, the fun slogan first originated in 2008 by local Wyomingites who specialized in storytelling of businesses and communities with video production. The business founders were creative in identifying the play on words and since the legend carries on as a campaign slogan for State Tourism.

Simply look online to view all the creative photos and videos captured by participants by searching #FlyYourWY

Special thank you to Senator Affie Ellis!

Four Cheyenne Fire Rescue firefighters will participate in The Scott Firefighter Stair climb in Seattle, Wash. on Sunday, March 11.

Firefighters are Sarah DeLay, Tyler Gautreau, Vincent Padavano, and Kevin West. DeLay has participated four years, and this will be the first time for Gautreau, Padavano, and West.
These firefighters have been practicing for this climb at the Wyoming Financial Center in downtown Cheyenne.

The event is the world’s largest air breathing apparatus stair climb competition. It will be held at the Columbia Center which is 69 floors, 1,356 steps and is a 788-foot vertical elevation. The climb first started in 1992. Firefighters will have to race in their structural firefighting gear which includes boots, pants, coat, helmet, gloves, and breathing apparatus (approximately 75 pounds). Firefighters start the climb every 12 seconds. About 2,000 firefighters will participate.

The Stairclimb is a fundraiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Its mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgins disease and Myeloma and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. There are 1.2 million people in the United States who are living with or in remission.

In 2017, Andrew Drobeck of Missoula City Fire (Mont.) climbed the 1,356 steps in a winning time of 10:58. In that time, three people were diagnosed with blood cancer and one person lost their life to this dreadful disease.

Laramie County School District 1 Superintendent of Schools John Lyttle has announced he will retire June 30, which is the last day of the contract year.

“It has been a pleasure to work with Laramie County School District 1 students, staff, families and community over the course of a 41-year career,” Lyttle said. “I am proud of the positive steps we have taken as a district to improve student learning on an individual basis and I look forward to seeing this district continue to grow. We have a dedicated and committed staff that demonstrate every day their incredible commitment to our students.”

Lyttle began his career at Johnson Junior High School as a Teacher Corps intern. From there, he moved to Fairview Elementary for two years, returning to teach at Johnson for another three years. Next, he moved to East High School and later became the district art coordinator.

Lyttle served as an assistant principal for a year at Central High School before assuming the role of principal. Following his time at Central, Lyttle served for 15 years as the district’s Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources.

In July 2014, he served as interim Superintendent of Schools and was appointed by the Board of Trustees as permanent superintendent in February 2015.

“As a result of my extended career, I frequently get the opportunity to speak with former students that have graduated from our schools and I hear the positive difference their education has made in their own success,” Lyttle said. “I shall miss the day-to-day responsibility but will always continue to support our schools in any manner that I can.”

The Board of Trustees has begun the search process to fill the superintendent vacancy.
