Cheyenne filled with grit and can-do attitude says Mayor Orr

$

Mayor Marian Orr held a “State of the City” address for the community of Cheyenne. Starting with a video (to be published later) on the great community of Cheyenne, Mayor Orr thanked all those who have made this community great. She stated the purpose of the address was to “look back on 2017” and to “look forward to 2018”.

She thanked elected officials, department head officials and city employees, as well as family and friends. She recapped the great events of 2017, to include the incredible 150 year celebration events, notably that the city and members rallied together to put on the events without using a single dollar of taxpayer funds.

She noted that when she was elected, there were projected to be lean times, but that perseverance rings true in action in that there was growth when none was predicted, and deficits during a hard economy. Reaching goals to create this outcome included budget cuts without layoffs at the city level, increased savings through hard work at the City Council level, and 10 new Cheyenne Police Officers appointed throughout 2017 to help increase the safety of our community. They’ve even worked to create an air of transparency taking actions such as live-streaming the City Council meetings on Facebook so that the community can see from anywhere.

She noted that bringing in key players to make our community successful has been a part of the growing of Cheyenne. “We stole them” became a key phrase as she named the many folks that the administration intentionally brought to Cheyenne to make it a better community. Robert Briggs, formerly of Sheridan, was sought to make regulations easier for all to create a better business environment.

Future goals include the continued progress on the Enhanced Use Lease to increase housing for servicemen and women; recruitment and retaining of professionals; continued Downtown development; enforcing of speeding regulations; and increased broadband connectivity (1 GB up and down) in Cheyenne.

The Mayor closed with her introduction of two new initiatives for the community:

1) A formalized business ombudsman – someone who would work with businesses as a singular point of contact that could guide them through from the creation of a business throughout the entire process.

2) A new Broadband Taskforce, headed by the headmaster of ARRAY, Eric (ET) Trowbridge, which would delve into affordable and easily accessible broadband technology. She noted that this should be just as easy to access as the simple act of turning a light switch. They are to meet and provide a recommendation within the next 60 days.

She finished the meeting noting that Cheyenne’s forefathers were self-starters. “Cheyenne [was made on] grit and can-do attitude. It’s in our blood…2018-look out, and here we come.”

CPD Providing Security Training to Places of Worship

Due to the high interest in the Cheyenne Police Department’s workshop for security plans in places of worship, the department will host another workshop for those who could not attend the event in December. The two-hour training will help places of worship create security plans to keep citizens safe. This was developed in response to the church
shooting in Sutherland Springs, Texas, and is organized for those who work or volunteer in worship centers to make security plans designed to minimize harm done in the event of an active shooter. Attendees of the previous event are also encouraged to come again as we will discuss how plans have been implemented and how they can be improved. If previous attendees are interested in speaking about changes they’ve made, please contact jharper@cheyennepd.org to
coordinate.

Cheyenne Police Detective Jim Harper will lead the meeting. Detective Harper has designed the training to teach church personnel and members how to attempt to prevent critical incidents and how to react if a critical incident occurs during worship services.

Topics discussed in the training materials include:
— Conducting a Security Risk Assessment
— Developing a Place of Worship Security Plan
— What to do during the Critical Incident
— What to do immediately after the Critical Incident
— The need to provide Crisis Intervention Stress Management afterward

The workshop will be held at the Cheyenne Public Safety Center, 415 W. 18th St. on Tuesday January 23, from 6:00 p.m -8:00 p.m.

For anyone interested in attending, you can sign up at:

Cheyenne Community honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The Cheyenne community honored civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr today.

Honoring Martin Luther King Jr. meant bringing people from diverse backgrounds together to build authentic bonds of human understanding and value.

Martin Luther King Jr. was a social activist and Baptist minister who played a key role in the American civil rights movement from the mid-1950s until his assassination in 1968. King sought equality and human rights for African Americans, the economically disadvantaged and all victims of injustice through peaceful protest. Read more here.

The Cheyenne MLK Jr. March is much more than a march. It was an opportunity to put Dr. King’s words and ideals into practice by connecting people, young and old, from different races, religions or backgrounds to walk together and listen one another. It was also an opportunity to hear lived experiences and stories of Cheyenne’s African American/black community.

The March began at the Cheyenne Depot, ending at the State Capitol.

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.” Sermons from Martin Luther King Jr.’s book Strength to Love, 1963

Changes in Effect as CPD Takes Over Parking Enforcement

With the Cheyenne Police Department taking over the parking enforcement from the city, there are several changes to the process of parking tickets which Cheyenne residents should be aware of.

The traffic ticket payment boxes have been removed and parking tickets now fall under the Cheyenne Municipal Court system. Anybody who receives a parking ticket can now follow the instructions on that ticket and either pay it online at Citepayusa.com or pay it at the municipal court building which is temporarily housed at 2101 O’Neil Ave., Suite 115.

Long-term parking permits for the public parking garages can still be purchased through the city clerk’s office.
