Radon Health Risk Solutions

Radon Health Risk

Testing the radon levels found in Wyoming homes can help families know if a potentially dangerous health risk exists, according to the Wyoming Department of Health (WDH). Radon health risks solutions are available.

Radon is an invisible, odorless, tasteless and dangerous gas found in many places, including homes. Radon naturally occurs as a radioactive gas released from the element radium and is found in rocks, soil and water.

“As radium in the soil naturally degrades, it can seep up into your home, get trapped inside, and build in intensity,” said Allie Bain, Wyoming Integrated Cancer Services Program outreach and education supervisor. “All homes have radon; however, with higher levels of radon, the risks become a health concern.”

“Radon is recognized as the second leading cause of lung cancer,” Bain said. “Your ongoing exposure to higher, more dangerous radon levels can be reduced with testing and modifications to your home.”

An elevated level of radon is considered anything over 4 pCi/L (picocuries per liter of air) and should be fixed. Brain said while there is no safe level of radon, reducing exposure to the gas can also reduce the linked risk of cancer. The Wyoming Integrated Cancer Services Program has low-cost radon test kits available for individuals and families to purchase. For more information or to obtain a radon test kit, please visitwww.health.wyo.gov/publichealth/prevention/cancer/radon online or call 307-777-6015.

Government Shutdown Furloughs Impact Cheyenne

$

Hundreds in Laramie County  experienced a “Monday morning’s dream” of staying in on a snowy day because of the government shutdown furloughs.

This morning letters were issued to “non-essential” federal employees informing them of their furloughed status because of the government shutdown. Primary employers, F.E. Warren Air Force Base (250+ furloughed) and the Wyoming Military Department (210+ furloughed) were affected heavily. Essential civilian employees and active duty service members will work unpaid until Congressional steps are taken to issue compensation. According to past reports more than 750 employees were furloughed in 2013 for 16 days. While today’s government shutdown will not have that same impact, our local military was diligently preparing for shutdown and this does have a direct impact on their mission.

In this particular situation all offices and services on F.E. Warren Air Force Base remained open aside from the pool and education center.

Another economic loss which affects the State of Wyoming during a shutdown includes that of the tourism industry. The impact will be especially difficult for national parks like Yellowstone and Devils Tower due to closures, reducing tourism impact.

Have you ever visited a downtown area where there is a splash pad for families to enjoy?

Currently the City of Cheyenne is considering installing a splash pad in downtown Cheyenne in the depot plaza. According to City Councilman Pete Laybourn’s previously presented resolution, the splash pad is executing the strategic plans set forth by the Downtown Core Group. This group is comprised of the Cheyenne Downtown Development Authority/Main Street, Greater Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce, Cheyenne LEADs, , and Visit Cheyenne.

The resolution further explains that the Cheyenne’s 150th Anniversary Celebration Steering Committee plans to donate $15,000 for construction of the proposed water feature. A previous version of the water feature was projected to cost around $550K in total. This resolution is proposed to appropriate funds towards this project but the exact amount is to be determined. Additionally a bronze statue is being considered to commemorate the City’s 150th in this same resolution costing $125,000, which would be privately funded by donors.

CFD Accommodates Community Growth

Cheyenne Frontier Nights has grown to be an important part of Cheyenne Frontier Days. Featuring top name artists the park gets filled with visitors and residents by the thousands.

“This year we are committed to putting the ‘Cheyenne’ back in Cheyenne Frontier Days.” shared Cheyenne Frontier Days CEO, Tom Hirsig.

The organization looks to make changes in the upcoming year to accommodate positive community growth. One looming issue that the organizers will have to take into consideration is what growth will mean for the rodeo due to their current location being land-locked near I-25 and downtown. Additionally, their Park-N-Ride lot is currently being considered for a commercial and housing development, as is the parking lot near LCCC- currently utilized for the Thunderbirds’ festivities. Therefore, they have many factors to consider in the coming years as to how their organization can grow.

One major focus to accommodate positive growth is to focus and maintain quality control and provide optimal customer service. To make the night shows more enjoyable, they will be capping the number of tickets sold to 22,500 per show. Past shows, like Florida Georgia Line, sold over 25,000 tickets, with the additional 2,500 attendees causing strained safety and reduced overall quality control for the organization. The newly-imposed capped limit will change the way they can ensure a safer environment and be able to better serve goers.

Fatal Crash on Ridge Road

On January 22, 2018 at approximately 5:30 pm, Laramie County Sheriff Deputies responded to a two vehicle crash in the 6500 block of Ridge Road; a Trooper from the Wyoming Highway Patrol also assisted with the crash investigation.

According to the available information at the time of the crash, a vehicle being driven by a 17 year old female was heading north bound on Ridge road when she lost control and slid sideways into the South bound lane of traffic; also in the vehicle with her was 19 year old Dakota Wright.

When the vehicle entered the South bound lane, it was struck by another vehicle being driven by 37 year old Kathleen Cassidy. Cassidy’s vehicle impacted the passenger side door area of the first vehicle pushing it into the passenger compartment.

Both the 17 year old female and her passenger had to be extricated from the vehicle and were transported to CRMC for treatment; Wright later succumbed to his injuries. Alcohol did not appear to have been a factor in the crash but poor weather conditions may have contributed to the north bound driver losing control. Cassidy only sustained minor injuries from the deployment of her vehicles airbag.

Bitcoin & Blockchain Legislation

The first Tuesday of each month business professionals from across the city and varied industries meet to discuss current issues that affect businesses.

On January 9thHolland & Hart hosted the meeting of the Greater Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce’s Action & Advocacy Committee.

One of the topics for January’s meeting was Bitcoin and Blockchain. Having professionals from banking, accounting and legal industries, along with others, allows those in this committee to share their area of expertise to better educate the group as a whole. This works to create an environment where the group serves better than the individual.

According to the Wyoming Blockchain Coalition, industries positively impacted by adoption of blockchain technology include accounting, financial services, legal services, land title, licensing and permits, and many others.

There is proposed legislation that may assist with Wyoming’s race against Delaware to be the country’s leader in Bitcoin and Blockchain technology. Visit the Chamber’s website for legislative updates.

Join the conversation at the next Action & Advocacy Committee meeting on Tuesday, February 6 at 11:46 a.m. at the 2nd floor boardroom of the Historic Depot with Dr. Larry Meuli  as the host.

CEO of Cheyenne Frontier Days recently announced that the Cinch Rodeo Shoot-out will not take place this year in Cheyenne.

The Shoot-out’s first year was in 2014. The rodeo included 5 events in just one afternoon, awarding the champions in the same day. Cinch Rodeo Shoot-out tour locations are determined annually around the Nation and Cheyenne was not determined as a destination for 2018.

Cheyenne Frontier Days is seeing this as an opportunity. CEO of Cheyenne Frontier Days, Tom Hirsig shared recently that they wanted to put the “Cheyenne” back in Cheyenne Frontier Days. In the future you will see the organization working towards more community ties and business engagement throughout the 10 day rodeo.

LCCC’s public relations team earns state, regional and national honors

The last few months have been positive ones for the public relations office at Laramie County Community College.

Late last year, the team learned that they won a number of Medallion Awards with the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations. These awards honor excellence in marketing from two-year colleges from the region that includes Texas, Colorado, Oklahoma, Arkansas, New Mexico and Wyoming.

LCCC won the Gold Award, or first place, in the categories of magazine (for its community publication, “The Talon”), original photography – unmanipulated, and original photography – manipulated. The school also won second place for its recruitment microsite and third place for a promotional mailing for student ambassadors.

Additionally, LCCC was nominated for two Paragon Awards from NCMPR. These honors represent the best in marketing and public relations from more than 650 institutions across North America. LCCC is the only Wyoming school to be nominated in 2018 for these awards.

Finally, the Wyoming Press Association gave three awards to LCCC at its recent annual convention. As part of the associates’ arm of that organization, the college competed with the University of Wyoming as well as several other statewide agencies and organizations.
With WPA, the college won two first place awards: in the publications category for “The Talon” and another for internally developed advertising. LCCC also won third place in the feature photo category.

Microsoft Launches TechSpark

During the Wyoming Entrepreneurs event on Wednesday, January 26th at the Accomplice in Cheyenne, Microsoft  launched the TechSpark Initiative.

Dennis Ellis, Microsoft Community Relations Manager, shared a story about when automobiles created a huge economic shift in the United States when they entered into the market as a replacement to the horse-drawn wagon. During this time in 1890 there were 14,000 companies who had a role in building wagons and caring for the horses. Then in 1920 there were less than 100 of these businesses remaining. This was a time when jobs were not lost just transitioned. Those who used to be in the industry related to wagons moved towards that of automobiles. When the transition happened in fact, more jobs were made because several industries emerged. The credit industry became more robust because of car loans. Additionally, the advertising industry emerged at a new level.

“This was a disruption that unlocked opportunity.” explained Ellis, “We are now in the 4th revolution. Now it is related to how technology has disrupts various industries. That is why Microsoft now is focused on having local involvement and engagement. That is why they hired me. They are focused on ‘getting local.’ And committed to making this transition a positive one for the community.”

The program that Ellis launched is TechSpark, “aimed at fostering greater economic opportunity and job creation through partnership with rural and smaller metropolitan communities.” It is comprised of 5 initiatives:

  1. Digital Transformation Initiatives
  2. Digital Skills and Computer Science Education
  3. Career Pathways
  4. Rural Broadband
  5. Support for Non-profits

Downtown Entrepreneurs Awarded Community Beautification Award

If you have been in downtown Cheyenne, or even ask for a referral for where to hangout in Cheyenne, you will be directed frequently to either the Paramount Cafe or the Paramount Ballroom.

Both locations are fun areas to gather with friends and socialize. Today the Greater Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce Red Carpet Committee presented them with the beautification award for their investment in improving the community. During the presentation Jon and Renee Jelinek, owners and entrepreneurs shared that their project will be adding a porch in the back of the building which will serve all ages. A porch in the back alley will be a prime location to enjoy the outdoors because the ambiance is set by the colorful murals and historic facades of surrounding buildings.

“With the purchase of the Cafe in April 2013, we found the sense of community that we had been looking for in Cheyenne. We loved seeing it become a hub for people to get together, from business meetings to book clubs to teenagers coming to perform at Open Mic nights” shared the entrepreneurs of the Paramount Cafe, Paramount Ballroom and 2nd Floor @ the Paramount, as well as Plato’s Closest. “We wanted to expand on that, and began negotiations to buy the building. After a lengthy negotiation process, we purchased the Paramount building along with the adjacent Majestic building in October of 2015.”

Additional to the Paramount Cafe and the Paramount Ballroom, they purchased the upper floors of of the Paramount building and the Majestic building which had been vacant since the 80’s. It is now the home to innovative businesses, training resources, freelancers, and non-profits.

The Jelineks shared, “So, we began a 6 month renovation project to create a co-working office space, The Second Floor @ The Paramount. Co-working spaces are all about collaboration and creating a sense of community to help people launch and grow businesses, so it just made sense to have it become that. In spring of 2017 when the tenant in the street level space adjoining the Cafe ended her lease, we decided to expand the Cafe into the space with a craft cocktail lounge, the Paramount Ballroom. The building, which once housed the Capitol Ave Theatre and then the Paramount Theater, was once the gathering place for Cheyenne, and we hope to honor it’s history by bringing it back to it’s roots in arts, creativity and camaraderie.” They further shared “We see nothing but opportunity for downtown Cheyenne, and we feel so fortunate for having found our place.”

Congratulations to Cheyenne’s local entrepreneurs and visionaries, Jon and Renee Jelinek, owners of these awesome businesses!

Cheyenne Animal Shelter Receives $25,000 Grant

CHEYENNE ANIMAL SHELTER RECEIVES $25,000 GRANT FROM PETSMART CHARITIES® TO HELP PETS IN NEED FIND FOREVER HOMES

Today, the Cheyenne Animal Shelter announced their receipt of a new grant of $25,000 from PetSmart Charities, the leading funder of animal welfare in North America. This funding is designed to help the Shelter transport and relocate pets so they can find forever homes.

On a typical day, the Shelter can receive twice as many animals as are adopted out. In Fiscal Year 2017,
the Shelter received approximately 5,400 animals. If trends continue for Fiscal Year 2018, the numbers
are expected to reach between six and seven thousand animals, which is where transportation is
important.

“This money has given us the ability to purchase a truck to pull a trailer,” said Chelsey Fletcher,
Cheyenne Animal Shelter’s Director of Operations. “Kennels will be placed in the trailer, allowing us to increase the number of animals we can safely transport in various situations. When we are facing overcrowding, animals can be transported to other shelters and rescues. We will also be able to move animals from other rescues when we have space and assisting other shelters in saving animal lives.”

The Cheyenne Animal Shelter will also gain the ability to transport greater numbers of animals when
Animal Control officers respond to hoarding cases. As well, the Shelter will be able to assist during
disasters that may occur – locally or nearby — such as flooding, tornadoes or fire evacuations providing
the capability to move large numbers of animals to safer places.

Pet Transport is one of PetSmart Charities’ ten new grant categories designed to provide year-round
opportunities for animal welfare organizations and non-profits to apply for funding support. Funding
from PetSmart Charities can help to cover the costs associated with pet transportation, veterinary and
shelter care and vehicle maintenance and modifications. With the help of its animal welfare partners,
since 1994, PetSmart Charities has helped more than 7.4 million pets in need find forever homes.
