Michl McGee Honored at Business Week

A story of forward thinking and leadership was shared at Wednesday’s Circle of Champions Luncheon during DAPCPA Business Week.

Business Week began with the Circle of Champions Induction of Michl McGee, presented by Blue Federal Credit Union. Phil Van Horn moderated this fire-side chat. During the conversation there were many insights of how McGee, Hearne & Paiz became the business we know today. Michl McGee, a retired Certified Public Accountant, has played a crucial role in the economic development of Laramie County. He has spent countless hours giving to the community and is this year’s inductee into the Circle of Champions.

McGee retired from MHP, LLP, formerly known as McGee, Hearne & Paiz, LLP. He has been instrumental in economic development projects to include, the Cheyenne Business Parkway, which sits on 900 acres east of Cheyenne and hosts such businesses as EchoStar, Green House Data, Sierra Trading Post, the Lowe’s Distribution Center, and more. McGee has also been an active member of the Cheyenne Rotary Club, the Cheyenne Young Men’s Literary Club, Honor Flight and more. He has served on boards to include STRIDE Learning Center, the Laramie County School District 1 Board of Trustees, and United Way of Laramie County.

Michl McGee who was inducted into this elite group of business leaders shared the story of how what is known today is McGee Hearne & Paiz (MHP) got its name and joked, “They gave me the name McGee first because, you see, when you take the initials of McGee Hearne & Paiz, M-H-P, it is the same that McGladery had at one time,  M-H-P. So, we didn’t have to buy any new stationary.”

An active member of our community, McGee has set an example through his volunteerism, and was instrumental in guiding MHP, LLP as they donated accounting work for various charities and non-profit organizations. Additionally, he and his wife, Ellen, have raised a family of 14 children 11 of which were lovingly adopted by the family.

Followed by the Circle of Champions was the Schmooza Palooza Business to Business Expo which featured over 80 businesses and had more than 500 attendees from the public. Currently, the booths are participating in a photo competition on the Greater Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce Facebook Page. Go through the ALBUM and LIKE the photo you want to vote for. November 11th a winner will be announced.

Yesterday, the Chamber in partnership with the Wyoming Business Report hosted a educational event, SE Wyoming Economic Forecast. Panelists shared their insights on regional growth, problems and areas of opportunity. Business Week presented by DAPCPA then conclude today after the Horizons Lunch & Learn which addressed the top ten influences shaping the future for businesses in the next ten years.

The Spirit Locomotive Honors U.S. Armed Forces

Union Pacific’s Locomotive No. 1943, The Spirit, will make a stop in Cheyenne on November 13.

Union Pacific’s Locomotive No. 1943, The Spirit, is the 16th commemorative locomotive introduced in the 155-year-old company’s history. The Spirit honors the United States’ armed forces and the men and women filling their ranks. Created in collaboration with Union Pacific veterans, the locomotive illustrates the railroad’s connection to the thousands of veterans who helped build America through the centuries.
Read more here-
The design of the heritage locomotive dates back to the 1940s, however, its inspiration came about a year ago. Union Pacific Corporation board member, Gen. Charles C. Krulak, who served as the 31st Commandant of the Marine Corps, attended a farewell luncheon hosted in his honor by UPVETS, a Union Pacific employee group that supports veterans of the armed forces. He was presented with scale model of a veterans-themed Union Pacific locomotive painted by a local high school student.  Krulak was pleased with the idea of a locomotive dedicated to honoring veterans, and asked Union Pacific Chairman, President and CEO Lance Fritz to make it a reality.

The locomotive will make its stop in Cheyenne on November 13th. This is a FREE event to the public, and will begin with a reception from 10:30 a.m. – 11 a.m. The locomotive will then be on display from 11 a.m. – noon.

Spring Forward – Fall Back – Set your clock back one hour at 2 a.m. on November 5th.

Daylight Saving Time (DST) is the practice of setting the clocks forward 1 hour from standard time during the summer months, and back again in the fall, in order to make better use of natural daylight. These spring and fall clock changes continue a long tradition started by Benjamin Franklin to conserve energy.

If you forget, don’t worry, Monday morning you will be early for work, while everyone else is getting an extra hour of sleep.

Here is more about the history of Daylight Saving Time.

All Star Cheer-leading Squad

Young girls have opportunity to prepare for higher level cheer opportunities through local program.

The All Star Cheer-leading Squad is a great opportunity for the local Cheyenne youth to be introduced to competitive cheer before high school and College level.  A lot of  girls are unprepared for higher level cheer that adjacent states including Colorado and Nebraska have had access to.

There are currently 12 girls ages 6-13.  Isabell Loeffler, age 11, has been involved in the program for three years and continues her involvement because she loves it.  She has met a lot of her friends through cheer and is now one of the leaders.

She wants to encourage other youth in the area to join cheer, “It’s an easy way to be more sporty and make friends.”

Booster club president, Megan Mordahl, had wanted to see cheer in the community for years. Her daughter Luna, age 8, is in the squad.

As a parent Megan said this, “I love the unity of the way the girls work together. The big girls help the little girls every step of the way. This squad not only teaches this unity, but has all aspects of cheer-leading and will help them in their future. It give them the experience to perform in front of a crowd, which will pave a path for any sport they choose.”

Sara Oliez is the coordinator and has been involved in cheer and dance for over 20 years.  She has a working relationship with all of the local high schools. She helped start this program two years ago with 2016-2017 being the first competitive season. This has been the first local cheer squad to become certified through USASF to compete. This year they are scheduled to have five competitions and several other performances locally.

Volunteering in the community is important and will help the squad gain additional skills that will help them grow as an adult. The squad is looking for sponsors for uniforms, shoes, and help in offsetting the overall costs for competition.  For fundraising opportunities please contact Megan via email or at 307-220-4454.

The club is open to boys and girls ages 6-12.  For more information contact Sara or Megan.

Follow them on Facebook to see all upcoming competitions and performances.

The little houses that were moved from their locations earlier this year are seeing a new life as they are restored in their new location.

The updated homes are featured together near Arp Elementary. The homes had previously been denied permits for demolition in 2008 and were granted a moving permit in the spring of 2016 to be relocated and preserved. The process to move had been a year in the making, with more time still to come to finish the homes.  READ MORE

Cheyenne Animal Control requests hoarding charges be dropped.

After almost five months of care at the Cheyenne Animal Shelter, 19 purebred Springer Spaniels will be released to the Shelter on Saturday, November 11th.

This past June, Cheyenne Animal Control officers seized 21 dogs belonging to the same owner who allegedly failed to provide the animals with the minimum legal requirements for owning animals in Laramie County.

In cases where Animal Control deals with animal cruelty, officers have the legal authority to seize custody of the animal and hold it at the Shelter until a judge can issue a ruling in the case. With large cases such as with the Spaniels, this can often take up to six months or more.

The dogs vary in age, from six months to 10 years. When the animals arrived, Medical Director, Dr. Tessha Winsch examined the dogs, and many were injured and in poor health. Staff at the Shelter have been caring for the animals which includes daily care, scheduled training to prevent mental health decline, vaccinations and regular grooming. Two of the dogs have passed away during that time due to severe medical conditions.

The remaining 19 dogs have been held on court hold at the Shelter for 154 days. Cost of care for animals at the Shelter has been calculated to $48.50 a day, meaning each dog has cost the Shelter $7,469. That is a total loss of $146,373 the Shelter has experienced due to this hoarding case.

Cheyenne Animal Shelter Director of Operations, Chelsey Fletcher says, “We’re increasingly seeing more cases similar to this. When we receive large hoarding cases, it exhausts resources, and at times we have no other option than to request charges be dropped due to the expense and lack of space.”

Animal Control has requested charges be dropped so that the Spaniels can be adopted and move out of the Shelter and on to forever homes. They become the legal property of the Cheyenne Animal Shelter on Saturday, November 11th.
