Top U.S. Cities for Global Trade includes the City of Cheyenne.

Global Trade Magazine this year focused on the importance of smaller markets. Instead of just always focusing on larger communities like our southern neighbors, Denver. They specify that while big markets offer many important foundation elements to trade, currently those areas are over burdened with regulations, fees, and taxes.

“We are fortunate to have an active Chamber in our business community who works hard on protecting the pro-business policy and regulatory climate for businesses.” explains Stephanie Joy Meisner-Maggard, Vice President of the Greater Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce, “We are comprised of over 1,000+ businesses who understand the importance of governmental affairs as it relates to direct economic returns for our businesses. This is a testament to the great work of our committees, volunteers and area businesses.”

Below is what is listed for the City of Cheyenne.

“CHEYENNE, WYOMING

Population: 64,019

Unemployment rate: 3.6 percent

Sales tax: 5 percent

Though railroads have long been a mainstay of the local economy—the Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Union Pacific employ many residents—the city’s “Cheyenne Leads” initiative has pressed to diversify the economy, finding success on several fronts. Both Walmart and Lowe’s have distribution centers there, and the city has been successful in attracting several large data centers, including one from Microsoft. The city has also embraced local colleges offering tech programs.”

“Wyoming” is because of the people

What makes Cheyenne, Wyoming and the State of Wyoming unique is the people.

RE/MAX Capitol Properties premiered an online video series featuring Cheyenne locals explaining “Why Cheyenne?” Throughout each video it is clear that community members firmly believe in one another and they value civic trusteeship. With over 100 produced videos there is a clear theme: Cheyenne is a great community because of the people.

“We believe Cheyenne is a hidden gem, so we wanted to share the good news with the rest of the world with real people giving their, ‘Why Cheyenne,'” shared Stephanie Prescott, RE/MAX Capitol Properties Development Director/Owner.

Recently the State of Wyoming ENDOW initiative also released a video featuring the same theme, that Wyoming is unique because of the people who reside within its borders. Featured in the video are committee members of this particular group tasked with diversifying the State’s economy, along with Governor Matt Mead.

The State of Wyoming Office of Tourism launched a campaign recently focused as well on this same aspect which has been celebrated by local businesses and community members called #ThatsWY. The tagline was also used in the ENDOW video. This goes to show you that the State of Wyoming is grasping onto what the local business professionals of Laramie County have known for years and are proud of sharing, a great community is comprised of great people. Additionally, great people make even better communities!

Learn more on how you can get involved in diversifying your local economy by contacting your local Chamber of Commerce. These organizations work each day with local businesses. Laramie County’s, the Greater Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce, is the largest in the State representing over 1,000 local businesses interests.

LCCC Building Honored for Design

One of the newest buildings on the Laramie County Community College campus received a tremendous honor for its design.

CTA Architects Engineers received the Grand Prize Award for excellence in educational facility design in the fall 2017 edition of Learning By Design, the premier publication for education design innovation and excellence.

LCCC’s Flex Tech Building was recognized by the magazine for its architectural and interior design and for having benchmark-type attributes worthy of imitation.

Funding for the building was provided in part by Laramie County voters in a 2013 election. The facility houses several technical programs of study for the college and was constructed with adaptability to meet the current and future industrial workforce needs of Laramie County and the surrounding areas.

In its deliberation, the jury of architects and end-users applauded CTA Architects Engineers for its accomplishment in designing the facility based on six measures: innovation, community need, interior design, sustainability, functional design, and 21st century learning.

LCCC President Joe Schaffer had this to say about the recognition: “Although this is an architectural award, it’s also a good indication of the quality educational environment we are creating here at LCCC.  While some see the unique design that allows for flexibility, energy efficiency, and aesthetics, many of us also see the innovations this building has in how students interact, learn, and demonstrate their skills.  That is what they take to the workforce, and this building is exceptional in how it helps accomplish those things.”

Self Driving Cars Are Here

“We are going to an Autonomous world.” shared Gary Hallgren, President of Arity

Technology and new business systems can disrupt industry and make large adjustments. Big industries like Uber and Lyft have forever changed the taxi and shuttle industry and businesses like Airbnb has changed the conventional hotel industry. This in mind the next technology on the brink of disrupting the world known today is that of self-driving vehicles.

Peter Gigante, the Head of Policy Research for Lyft told the Regional Governmental Affairs Conference, “Self driving cars have been in the roads for years- we just don’t notice them.”

Gigante further elaborated on the advantages that self driving cars will have over traditionally driven vehicles. Elderly and the disabled will be capable of driving independently. Low density locations like rural America would especially benefit because public transportation is more sparse. Businesses can benefit from having a self-driving vehicle because it can drive through the night and for lengths of times humans are unable to do. This results in a quicker delivery time of goods.

Hallgren shared that with these advancements, “We need to help the consumer as well. By having the data to help consumers determine what is the most cost effective decision.”

Hallgren’s company, Arity, believes that the most data provides the most predictive insights and that is what should determine decisions. Both industry and individual consumers needs to see that advancements like self-driving cars can actually help save lives by reducing the number of fatal crashes in a year. 95% of accidents are caused by human error. Self-driving cars are still in the research and development phase but both presenters stated that to be successful they will need to be tested in controlled real world environments to provide the best technology for society. Additionally, autonomous cars will need to drive more like humans, and leveraging data to move down this path is where All State’s data captured through Arity will be important.
