The state of Wyoming was well-represented at this year’s Congressional Award Gold Medal Ceremony in Washington, D.C. June 21, 2018. Last month, members of the United States Senate and House of Representatives honored 442 youth across 41 states at the 2018 Congressional Award Gold Medal Ceremony including 42 who travelled from Wyoming. Recipients of The Congressional Award Gold Medal earned the highest honor Congress bestows upon America’s youth.

For a minimum of two years, each Gold Medalist logged hundreds of hours across four program areas: Voluntary Public Service, Personal Development, Physical Fitness, and Expedition/Exploration.

The 2018 Gold Medal class was the largest in the national program’s 39-year history, representing an unprecedented year of servant leadership. This year’s class contributed 371,280 service hours to communities near and far, an average of 840 hours per medalist. This special recognition event took place in the historic Kennedy Caucus Room of the Russell Senate Office Building, located on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.

Wyoming medalists included the following who met with and received their Gold Medal from all three members of Wyoming’s Congressional Delegation (Senator Mike Enzi, Senator John Barrasso, M.D., and Representative Liz Cheney).

Lack of Staff Ignites Revamped Business Models

$

0

Recently the well-known family owned business L’Osteria Mondello closed their Ristorante portion of their business.

The business is located on Stillwater Avenue and housed both a “Pizzeria” and a “Ristorante.” Currently because of inability to hire adequate staffing for the ristorante portion of the business, they moved forward with closing this part of their business to focus purely on the Pizzeria.

This has become a common struggle for Cheyenne businesses. The beloved Mitchell’s Barbecue restaurant which resided in Cheyenne’s downtown closed when it did because it struggled with staffing. 2 Doors Down used to have two locations in Cheyenne, one on Dell Range and two businesses downtown. With the same staffing concerns the owners decided to consolidate their business into one, keeping only of the one location’s downtown operating.

In the future, more businesses may revamp their business model’s like L’Osteria Modello. Additionally, businesses in the area which are a part of larger chains like Olive Garden have adopted the use of technology to help with some basic duties of service staff. Over time it will become more common as technologies become accessible for local small businesses. One example of this is The Ballroom, a new cocktail lounge downtown, uses iPad’s to take orders.

What are your thoughts on the use of technology in restaurants?

Delayed Panera Bread Construction Ceases

Last July Breads of the World, LLC announced the construction of their newest Panera Bread restaurant in Cheyenne.

Originally the construction on the project was to be completed during March of 2018. City of Cheyenne permitting caused an unanticipated delay for construction. Aztec Construction is currently working on the project again. With the delays Panera Bread doesn’t know an ultimate date for opening. However the construction was first delayed because of permitting.

The Panera Bread restaurant is known for its freshly baked goods, delectable soups and salads, even its sandwiches. The best decision of a customer’s day at Panera is choosing between chips or a delicious apple for their side.

According to a feature by the Wyoming Tribune Eagle, the company building this Panera Bread also owns 38 locations within the State of Colorado. They plan to utilize some of their existing managers from Colorado for this location and estimate the hiring of 60-70 local employees in the City of Cheyenne.

The location where the restaurant is being built is off of Dell Range Blvd. catty corner to Chick-Fil-a near Windmill.

Man Arrested After Assaulting Officer

On July 11, at about 6:45 p.m., a Cheyenne Police Department officer responded to the 900 block of E. Carlson in regards to a suspicious circumstances call. The officer contacted Sean Archer, 27, of Cheyenne, who exited a car while drinking a beer. The officer attempted to detain Archer and Archer grabbed the officer’s arm, eventually putting the officer into a headlock. The officer was able to radio for assistance and a second officer quickly
arrived. The two officers together were able to control Archer and nobody was seriously injured during the event.

Archer was arrested for assault on a police officer and transported to the Laramie County Jail.
This case remains under investigation by the Cheyenne Police Department.

Making the most of summer visitors

$

For many families, summer is a time for vacations. Road trips accounted for 22 percent of vacations in 2015, but that number jumped to 39 percent in 2016, according to MMGY Global’s 2017-2018 Portrait of American Travelers.

And more Americans are expected to go on vacation in the coming years. That’s a good thing for many small businesses in Wyoming that benefit from summer tourism – especially because Wyoming was ranked the number one road trip destination by WalletHub last month. With more potential customers hopping in their cars and heading to the Cowboy State, give them a reason to stop in and see you.

“As a former small business owner, I understand that sometimes it’s the little things, like making special welcome signs or placing unique items toward the storefront, that can help accommodate visitors. Many travelers look for local souvenirs to bring home, so your business may want to point out locally-made items. Try to identify new customers – you can simply ask if they’ve visited your business before – and take steps to ensure their experience is positive. Brush up on your knowledge of the products and be prepared to answer any questions. This is also a good time to review customer service techniques and alter operating hours if necessary.” shared Senator Mike Enzi

MMGY Global’s most recent travel survey looked at motivations for vacations and found that exploration, self discovery, pursuing hobbies and experiencing new cuisines have increased significantly in recent years. You don’t have to be an outdoor guide or restaurant owner to see the positive effects of summer visitors; there’s a little bit of everything for people to enjoy in our state. Even if a family is coming to visit Yellowstone or go to Cheyenne Frontier Days, they will likely make stops along the way. Travelers will oftentimes search online for local businesses. Google My Business is a tool to manage your online presence across Google. You can make sure your business summary, hours and location are all up to date. You can also claim your listings on review sites, interact with customers and add information like menus and photos. With two-thirds of Americans accessing the internet on their smartphones, it’s important to double check that your site is mobile friendly and easy to navigate.

If your business tends to slow down in the summer instead of pick up, there are still plenty of ways for you to get ahead. The summer months are a great time for strategic planning and internal review. Take a look at your inventory and equipment to evaluate if any improvements are needed. If you have had an idea or project you have been thinking about implementing, get started on it, even if it’s simply cleaning a closet or getting some training. Set goals and list activities that will help you achieve them.

“Summer is a great time for a lot of things and I encourage you to make the most of it. As people hit the road this season, put yourself in the best position to be one of their stops.” Further explained Senator Enzi.

City of Cheyenne to Care for Trees in Downtown

$

0

Cheyenne Urban Forestry Division (CUFD) is now responsible for the trees within the City’s right-of-way in the Downtown Development Authority’s (DDA) district as per City Council approval on June 25.

This means the City of Cheyenne will be planting and caring for the trees along the streets in the downtown.  The Clean and Safe Division will continue tree watering and the CUFD will provide all other tree related care and maintenance. The CUFD completed a tree inventory of the downtown trees a couple years ago and will be updating this inventory to provide a current picture of the downtown tree population. From this data, CUFD will prioritize work by focusing first on public safety, followed by tree health.

Their first order of business will likely be removing trees that are dead and/or hazardous, pruning trees that are affecting clearance or visibility, and removing metal grates and strapping material that are girdling trees or are creating tripping hazards. Downtown business owners are encouraged to contact CUFD at 637-6428 with any concerns or questions regarding trees adjacent to their properties or if they have open tree grates where they would like a tree planted.

The DDA district is bounded by House Avenue on the east, Snyder Avenue on the west, 22nd Street on the north, and the Union Pacific Railroad tracks on the south. The district also includes a small strip south of the Central Avenue viaduct that is bounded by Central Avenue on the east, Capitol Avenue on the west, Deming Drive on the south, and West 11th Street on the north. A map of the district boundaries can be found below and is also attached.

Central Cafe Opens Drive-Thru

The Central Cafe drive-thru is now open.

Central Cafe recently opened the new portion of the cafe. The amenity will be great for those headed into work wanting gourmet coffee and perfect for those on the run for a good bite to eat at lunch. In February, the Central Cafe officially opened with the intention of opening the drive-thru at a later date.

One component of this business, making it particularly unique, is the current structure and layout. It honors its previous life as a gas station, and utilizes a once garage door space as an opening to a patio. The use of the back portion of the property with the addition of this drive-thru further optimizes the property.

Farmers Markets brings a local flavor to any grocery shopping experience.

The Cheyenne’s Market for Local Products features details on their Tuesday Farmers Market which began on June 19th and will continue until October 9th from 3 to 6 p.m. The market is located on the Northwest corner of the Frontier Mall Parking Lot just south of the JC Penney store.
Featured are fresh local produce options, meats, eggs, honey, jams, salsas, sauces and baked goods. These markets can also be a great introduction to finding products from local entrepreneurs, like Doug Rose. He took a 20 year passion which was creating original salsa recipes for family and friends, into a operating family owned and operated business with Wild Rose Salsa.
Wild Rose Salsa is a business in Cheyenne who utilizes markets as a means to introduce their 8 flavors of salsa to community members but once purchased, their customers always come back for more. In fact, their product is so popular they offer an ecommerce website to capture orders.

Goats Return To Cheyenne To Feast On Creek Vegetation

Goats will return to Cheyenne to help City officials manage vegetation in Dry Creek and Crow Creek.

“As vegetation increases in the creek areas, there is the potential that there could be flooding in the creeks,” said Vicki Nemecek, Public Works Director for the City of Cheyenne. “As they graze, the goats eat the vegetation, including noxious weeds, and help keep floodwaters down.”

The goats cut down on invasive weeds that can take over the watershed area. And in watershed areas their seeds are able to spread to a wider area. Nemecek said the city could use human labor to manage the vegetation, but that would be substantially more expensive than goat labor.

There will be two herds of goats. One will start out at Dry Creek and Dell Range and move east. The second group of goats will be located at the Crow Creek and Ames Avenue underpass. The goats will be here about a month and are funded through the Fifth Penny Sales Tax.

The goats will be contained to specific areas using a portable electric fence and trained border collies.

Contest for Attendees: A special ShortGo contest in recognition of Cheyenne’s heritage and community will be hosted at the photo booth as well. After the event, all the photos will be posted to a Facebook album for voting.
