City of Cheyenne Commits $600k to Commercial Air Service

Cheyenne Regional Airport is in need of funds for a commercial airline.

To help recruit a new commercial air service provider to the Cheyenne airport a minmum revenue guarantee, often referred to as MRG, needs to be available. The Cheyenne Regional Airport has dedicated $200,000 and plans to secure $580,000 of State funds. They have now gained the support of the Cheyenne City Council who appropriated $600,000 towards air service (8-0 vote).

The next government body to further assess financial support for air service is the Laramie County Commissioners. Hopefully with these investments along with private contributions a high enough MRG can be raised for a regular commercial flight.

Great Lakes Airlines was the last commercial air service provider in Cheyenne and rapidly discontinued their services in March.

Breaking Ground on Christensen Road Project

The Christensen Overpass project approved in 2017 is underway. The City of Cheyenne has started on this project which will greatly aid in getting citizens on the east side of Cheyenne connected.

“The Christensen Overpass is an important project that will ultimately improve efficient transportation and connectivity for Cheyenne residents upon completion. The scale and scope of the project will require an extensive construction time-frame. The time frame is needed to allow the project to progress through construction with safety and the needs of the public in mind.  In the end, the project will benefit the residents and visitors of Cheyenne. As the City grows in population and geographical scale, our infrastructure naturally needs to grow along with it. This project will certainly help meet our growing needs.” Shared the City of Cheyenne.

Tuesday the Laramie County Commissioners approved a match of $600k towards commercial air service.

The City Council of Cheyenne recently approved $600k towards the minimum revenue guarantee needs for commercial air service. Now the County will be contributing another $600k. These funds will be in addition to $580k from the State, $200k in Federal funding and $200k from private community investment.

Having a commercial airliner in Cheyenne is a primary focus because there is a new terminal currently being built from an additional tax that was collected. The government agrees with the importance of providing this type of service with the unanimous support from both government bodies, City and County.

The Greater Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce proudly hosted the Gubernatorial Race forum featuring 7 Candidates.

Gay Woodhouse of Woodhouse Roden Nethercott, LLC moderated the event and addressed during the session were business and economic issues.

Candidates included:

  • Foster Friess
  • Sam Galeotos
  • Mark Gordon (answered questions in advance)
  • Harriett Hageman
  • Taylor Haynes
  • Bill Dahlin
  • Mary Throne

“I saw us going down the same roads and expecting the same results.” Mary Throne, Candidate for Governor shared why she chose to run, “We don’t have to be a boom or bust State.”

When asked about economic diversification and the role in technology:

Candidate Bill Dahlin shared that the Wyoming Business Council was created to diversify our State but we are still heavily dependent on the energy sector. He plans to apply organic growth methods for advancement, this is looking at products like industrial hemp. If it can grow in Wyoming, we need to prioritize it shared Dahlin. Candidate Foster Friess said it is important to prioritize the businesses we already have. His philosophy is to grow our own and brand Wyoming as a product amenity using the example of Wyoming Beef.

Small Business success is critical to our community’s economy, what policies would you put in place as Governor:

Candidate Taylor Haynes expressed we have to reform how we do education and further included information technology as a requirement to improve our base for future entrepreneurs. Candidate Mary Throne shared that small business are the engine of our future. There are technological issues for small businesses throughout the state because of the limited accessibility to broadband. She was a part of a legislature effort to fix this problem and was successful this last session. Therefore the prides herself on those strategic partnerships to tap into other funding sources to address those issues.

We need workers in the State according to Candidate Sam Galeotos. This poses to be the primary issues for small businesses according to his findings ina small business advisory group we assembled.

What will you do to ensure funding for our State’s largest employers; FE Warren and Wyoming Military’s Department.

Candidate Harriett Hageman shared that the modernization is critical to our State, City of Cheyenne and even more critical to our Nation’s security. As a Governor this is a major priority for Hageman because they are such important parts of our economy.

Galeotos further expressed that the Congressional delegation will be primary in making sure GBSD is funded. We will need to help position our Base to receive the upgrades first.

When asked about revenue issues in our State specifically addressing school and infrastructure issues, the candidates had this to say:

Friess said we need to focus on maintaining our friendly tax environment and provide solutions through income.

“So many of the projects we are talking about will require a State Income tax, I am against this tax.” Declared Hageman.

She further shared reform recommendations, best practices for resources and her outline for effective ways to approach this issue.

Transportation is critical to the State and particularly to the City of Cheyenne, how will you help provide solutions for needs in infrastructure:

Dahlin spent many years in the Rail Road industry and expressed that he will be careful in how to fund that kind of service.

Throne thinks that we need to make better decisions in this State before we can successfully approach a commuter rail investment. This is a “pie in the sky” dream if we don’t re-think transportation. Going down the same road is fiscally irresponsible.

Haynes is not interested in funding a transportation project that is connecting of the State because he thinks we need to fund transportations within the interior of the State.

The candidates then addressed audience submitted questions and remained after to further visit with attendees.

Taco John’s and Jonah Bank donate $22,000 to Grace for 2 Brothers.

Today, June 13, 2018 Taco John’s International along with Jonah Bank presented a check of $22,000 to Grace for 2 Brothers – a suicide education and prevention organization.

Jim Creel, CEO of Taco John’s International spoke about suicide in Wyoming and the Nation. “Suicide is at an epidemic stage in our country. Last week’s high profile deaths only serve to illustrate the magnitude of the problem. Wyoming is particularly acute. Our state has one of the highest suicide rates in the country.”

Click here for statistics on suicide.

Jim continued by saying, “Last year during this campaign, Taco John’s raised $9600 for suicide education and prevention. This year I challenged our restaurants to top that number. I asked our General Managers to make this a top priority, and beat last year’s total. I am thrilled to say our General Manager’s rose to the occasion and nearly doubled last year’s number, raising more than $17,000.”

The Taco John’s store on Pershing Blvd. raised more than $3700, a store in Gillette raised more than $3100, and the Carey Ave. location raised more than $2000.

Gregg Jones, Executive VP for Jonah Bank, a partner in this program spoke about the importance of this campaign. “With Wyoming having one of the largest suicide rates in the Nation, that fact alone is reason enough to support this campaign and bring it out of the shadows and into the public eye. A recent study by Vanderbilt University shows the number of school-age children and adolescents hospitalized for suicidal thoughts or attempts has more than doubled since 2008.”

Mayor Marian Orr spoke about the difference an organization like Grace for 2 Brothers has in making an impact to not only the Cheyenne community but communities around the state. “Without funding from the public and private sector, like Jonah Bank, these programs wouldn’t continue.”

Paramount Garden Now Open

The Paramount Garden is now open and accessible by both the Paramount Cafe and The Ballroom.

Over the years there has been much transition in old Paramount Theatre building and the Majestic. The newest advancement of the business venture is the opening of the Paramount Garden. Using a pre-established doorway, the renovation busted through the brick to create an entry for the garden space which features additional seating  and a scenic view of the alley murals.

Investments into the beautification of buildings throughout the community has become more of an interest. Recently renovated in the community has been the Central Cafe, which was once a Gas Station. Crooked Cup, in downtown Cheyenne, was once a location for a tattoo parlor.

Go view the new Paramount Garden when attending the Cheyenne Artwalk, on the second Thursday of the month at 5 to 8 p.m., or when visiting the cafe next. It is definitely an oasis in downtown.

Recently, writer Liza Weisstuch of Budget Travel visited Cheyenne and cultivated a list of 7 Things to Do in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

The short guide is an excellent resource to share with incoming family members or visitors as they can choose from the incredible opportunities listed! Museums, such as the Old West Museum, were listed as a must-do, as our Western heritage is important to share. Another incredible note from the author? We have great distilleries, such as Pine Bluffs Distilling and we’re gaining more to include  Chronicles Distilling, to be located in the Downtown Asher Building.

Among the best places to hang out include sister companies, The Paramount Ballroom and The Paramount Cafe for the best beverages any time of day. Additionally, high tea at the Nagle Warren Mansion was noted as a great location for afternoon tea, and shopping at local stores like The Wrangler and Boot Barn are a must. According to Weisstuch, another must-stop is the historic Atlas Theatre, which you may have noticed is getting a facelift! Additionally, the Atlas is also hosting Emma’s Old Time Photos, a local small business, for the summer.

Among other great businesses in our community, the author lays out a great day or two trip for residents and visitors alike! Make sure to share the article, and don’t miss the great opportunities like getting your hat shaped at The Wrangler!
