The Cheyenne Animal Shelter now offers “Lost & Found” on website.

Anytime a pet is lost the family wants as many options to helping find their loved ones. The Cheyenne Animal Shelter now has another way to reconnect lost pets and their families.

Each year the Cheyenne Animal Shelter returns about 1,000 lost pets to their owners. There are several ways the Shelter reunites families, and we are adding one more way to do so. The Cheyenne Animal Shelter has launched a Lost and Found Form on its website, which allows
the community to upload a description and an image of the animal, as well as contact information. Adding this information to the website gives the public a real-time look at what information the Shelter receives every day.

“Losing a pet can be a scary experience. There’s an urge to try to find your pet as quickly as possible.” says Stephanie Bilbro, Cheyenne Animal Shelter Manager, “This is a way to connect the community to each other and give neighbors a quick and convenient source that will help get animals back to their families.”

By posting lost and found animals on the website, www.cheyenneanimalshelter.org, it gives anyone an opportunity to see the reports. The posts will rotate every 30 days, and outdated information will be removed.

The Shelter encourages the community to continue using all resources available. If the Shelter is open, you can call the front desk at 307-632- 6655. During non-business hours, give the After Hours Lost &  Found Hotline a call at (307) 214-5779.

Cheyenne Animal Control Responds to Barking Dog

Information regarding barking dog incident.

Cheyenne Animal Control would like to clear up any misinformation about an incident on Friday, December 15, 2017, which began with a barking dog complaint and ended with the arrest of the owner.

Around 10:30 p.m., Animal Control was called to the 6700 block of Moreland Avenue to respond to a complaint of three barking dogs on the property.

When AC officers arrived, the dogs were barking, and it appeared no one was at the home. Officers were unsure of how long the dogs had been outside and believed they might be cold, so officers decided to investigate the backyard.

Animal Control Officer Don Kremer says, “When I approached the backyard, the dogs were growling, showing teeth, and pushing against an opening in the gate towards me.”

Animal Control requested additional backup, while the dogs continued to bark and show aggression. Upon the arrival of two other Animal Control officers, pepper spray was shot toward the ground in front of the dogs, which made them retreat. Then AC officers entered the backyard according to Laramie County ordinance Chapter II Section II.

AC officers used catch poles, which consist of a vinyl covered cable that loop around the dog’s neck in the fashion of a leash to control the animals and lead them into the Animal Control vehicle.

While escorting the dogs to the vehicle, the dogs tried to break away from the catch pole by turning, twisting and biting the end of the pole. The dogs pushed their cheeks inside of their mouth, biting down causing minor injuries to their own mouths.

The dogs were placed into an ACO vehicle, then the owners arrived home. Dalton Nelson allegedly went to the ACO vehicle and tried to release the dogs from the vehicle and started fighting with officers. At that time, the Cheyenne Police Department was called to the scene, and Nelson was arrested on an outstanding warrant.

The dogs were returned the owners and a citation was written for barking dogs. Additional charges are being considered by AC officers.

Firefighters for Charity

Cheyenne Firefighters have wrapped up a busy month of community giving with some very special annual traditions.

Each year, the firefighters spend much of their off duty time helping the community. The Union’s Christmas Trees for Charity sold 160 trees in fewer than two weeks, netting nearly $3,000 to be donated to local charities; Safe House and Youth Alternatives being the dominant two. Christmas baskets will be delivered for the Empty Stocking Fund by a convoy of Cheyenne Fire Rescue vehicles and off-duty personnel.

Spokesperson for Local 279 Derek Pollnow says “our Christmas tree sales continue strong and will prompt us into looking to have more, and bigger, trees available next year. As for the Christmas baskets, we typically deliver sixty to seventy for the Empty Stocking Fund and possibly delivering even more tomorrow morning.”

With a new annual drive that has shown great success upon its inception, the bicycle drive will also conclude on Wednesday morning by giving out 80 bikes and helmets to children in need this holiday season. Children were selected by utilizing the Laramie County School District’s counselors.

Children and their families have been invited to the Cheyenne Fire Rescue headquarters fire station to pick up their
new bicycles and helmets and to have them sized and adjusted. “We are extremely proud of this new
event and cannot thank our community and our own members enough for donating the bicycles,
helmets, and money to bring the joy to these children. All of us are truly honored to be a part of
Cheyenne and Laramie County, both on duty and now.”

3rd Annual Shop with a Cop

The Wyoming Highway Patrol, the Laramie County Sheriff’s Office, the Cheyenne Police Department, and the Pine Bluffs Police Department teamed up again this year for the Cheyenne area “Shop With A Cop” event today, December 20th.

Approximately 30 elementary students from the Laramie County School Districts were picked up from their respective schools by an officer and taken to the southeast Cheyenne Walmart by a patrol vehicle.

Each student was able to shop with an officer and spend $100 + as they wish. Most of the kiddos didn’t spend money on themselves, but on presents for family members. After each one was completed shopping they were able to sit, enjoy some snacks and watch a movie. Lastly, each family went home with a turkey and all the fixings to complete a Christmas dinner.

The intent of this event is to provide these children with a little merrier holiday season as well as providing them with a positive experience with law enforcement. This event also gave officers the opportunity to learn more about the children and their dreams.  Sonny, one of the kids is going to grow up and play in the NFL, and then become a Marine.

Alisha, Walmart Store Manger had this to say about the event, “Our associates are so excited about planning for the good that is around the Shop with a Cop, as it relates to the community.”

Laramie County is not the only location to host a “Shop with a Cop,” event. This is a state wide program. You can find photos from events around the state on the WHP Facebook page.

To view more photos of today’s shopping trip click here.

In 2016, there were 31 students from 29 Laramie County schools who were able to go shopping with 36 law enforcement officers.

2 Orange Brothers up for Adoption

Do you have room under your Christmas tree for two orange brothers?

Weighing in at 20 pounds and 17 pounds respectively, 8 year old Sonny and Sandy have lived with each other their entire lives. They are looking for a home together, and Black Dog Animal Rescue (BDAR) would love to see that dream come true.

These extra large boys were surrendered to BDAR when their family had to move overseas.
Read their full story online:
Sonny’s Story
Sandy’s Story

Sonny is the more timid and sensitive of the two, and takes a little more time to warm up than his brother.

Sandy is more sociable right off the bat and helps Sonny feel a little more comfortable.

They both enjoy each other’s company immensely. Their favorite things include being brushed, getting pets and belly rubs from their humans, sleeping in the bed, and spending time outdoors with their people. They have never been allowed to roam without supervision. Neither have been around other animals, but we can certainly test them with dogs and other cats if needed. We know it’s not an easy task taking on two new pets at once, but we also know that Sonny and Sandy will be happiest as a pair, and the boys’ previous owner is offering a fun incentive to whoever adopts them together, and has also sponsored their adoption fees in full!

We are happy to answer any questions you have about these big, sweet boys. You can call us at 307.214.6600 or email us at bdar@bdar.org.

In a State Decline, Laramie County Grew

While majority of the State of Wyoming school districts have decreased, Laramie County School Districts #1 & #2 both grew.

A new state report revealed that there was an increase in enrollment for Laramie County School Districts from the 2016-2017 year to 2017-2018 compared to the state. According to Wyoming Department of Education, overall the state experienced a .3% decrease in public school enrollment over the same period.

Laramie County School District #1 had an increase of 35 students (14,071 total) and School District #2 had a 50 student increase (1,051). While much of the statewide decrease resulted from economic downturn  from the energy industry, the greater Cheyenne area saw an increase because of the economic development work of the Greater Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce.

The expertise of the Greater Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce resulted in 600+ jobs in the military for the greater Cheyenne area. This replaced jobs lost from the energy sector and some.

“The ultimate goal of the Chamber is to help create an economy where the standard of living is improved for all.” shared Greater Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce Chairman and Entrepreneur, Nick Dodgson, “Pro-active efforts towards economic advancements result in growth but protects the well-being of the existing business climate. This is what our Chamber specializes in and they do an exceptional job.”

Retail sales have increased by 13% over the last year.

The economic activity in Laramie County is improving. Measured using retail sales there has been a 13% increase compared to 2016. There has been a 19.3% increase from the second to the third quarter in 2017. Total tax collections improved by 18.4% over the last year and 21.7% from the second to the third quarter. This is positive for the greater Cheyenne area and also a positive trend for retail.

Currently with retail being at-risk because of online sales any improvement in the arena during a busy shopping season is worth celebrating. Shopping locally is critical to the local tax base and mindful purchases from small businesses and entrepreneurs will help strengthen the area’s economy.

Earlier this year, Halladay Subaru generously donated $10,000 to Climb Wyoming to help create brighter futures for struggling single mothers and their families across Wyoming. Climb is a statewide nonprofit whose mission is for low-income single mothers to discover self-sufficiency through career training and placement. The funds will be used for Climb’s comprehensive program of job training and placement, mental health counseling and life skills training’s for low-income single mother families in the area.

“We appreciate this generous donation from Halladay Subaru,” said Ray Fleming Dinneen, Climb Founder and Executive Director. “In Wyoming 48% of single mother families with children under the age of 5 live in poverty in 2015.
