Red Cross seeking volunteers to install smoke alarms in Laramie

As part of the Red Cross’s national home fire safety campaign, the American Red Cross of Wyoming is hosting a Sound the Alarm event in Laramie on Saturday, September 30th. The plan is to install 300 smoke alarms in Laramie homes, all completely free of charge.

To do so, Red Cross of Wyoming is seeking volunteers to install the alarms. Training will be provided for installation, and all equipment necessary will be provided. Volunteers will meet at approximately 8:30 AM on Sept. 30 at the Territorial Prison Historical Site and finish up by 2 PM. Free breakfast will be provided!

Sound the Alarm is part of a multi-year national Red Cross program to reduce the number of deaths and injuries from home fires. Red Cross is accomplishing this goal by trying to make sure all homes have smoke alarms, and by presenting preparedness programs to families, children, businesses, and communities. It’s been shown that smoke alarms give people precious time to escape from a burning building. And people should have plans in place for escaping or evacuating their homes in any disaster, not just home fires. For more information on the programs that Red Cross can provide, contact the Red Cross of Wyoming office in Cheyenne: Disaster Program Manager James Ledwith at (307) 763-2230 ; james.ledwith@redcross.org.

Sign up to volunteer for Sound the Alarm here: https://volunteerconnection.redcross.org/?nd=vms_public_form&form_id=2131 .

Anyone who needs smoke alarms installed in their home can sign up for their free installation here:www.preparewyoming.org/fire .

Downtown Development Authority Board Pushes Reset Button

Sam Galeotos, Chairman of the Downtown Development Authority, held a press conference today, Friday, September 8th, in the Asher Building to address the organization’s future. The organization has gone 8 months without an Executive Director and recently received a significant budget cut by the City of Cheyenne. Currently their Board of Directors is comprised of many freshmen members and  addressed in the conference was the importance of focusing on the future and not the past.

During the press conference Galeotos stated, “Our downtown is going to be different and to make it vibrant is going to have to be way different than fixing a bunch of buildings. There’s going to have to be a lot of capital investment in it. We are going to have completely change it around. We have a great asset in the Depot Plaza but we are not going to just survive on the Depot Plaza. That effort and initiative needs to be taken to other parts of downtown. I feel we need to have a picture of what downtown is going to look like.”

He further shared that the Board will focus on 7 specific points.

  1. Clarification of the organization’s role in the defined downtown district
  2. Define success through metrics, measurements and milestones
  3. Reflect on organization’s programs and initiatives
  4. Review and identify key infrastructural issues and overall hurdles for the revitalization
  5. Developing and refreshing the organization’s vision and plan for downtown
  6. Align the organization to support the identified needs and initiatives of the organization
  7. Meet with stakeholders and City leadership to advance

Galeotos believes that “The downtown that we have today or had is not going to be the downtown of the future.”

The Downtown Development Authority Board of Directors will move forward on implementing this plan. They are currently 6 weeks into the initiative and they acknowledge they have many challenges ahead of them.

68% of employees quit due to their immediate supervisor.

Cheyenne Professional Network, a young professional group of the Greater Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce, brought in retention expert, Mike Henke on Wednesday, September 13, at the Cheyenne Atlas Theatre.  The seminar was brought to the community by businesses, Samson Energy and also supported by B’s Baked Goods, Magic City Enterprises and Walmart Distribution Center.

“The Greater Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce visits with businesses on a daily basis and noticed retention as a common concern.  Thus, Mike presented to the business community three core retention methods; voice at work, communication and personal growth.” expressed Director of Partner Relations, Tonya Dove.

Below are three tactics to improve retention within businesses and best practices so employees are retained.

 –  Voice at Work:  The days of the company CEO being “off-limits” are over.  Retaining employees today includes a platform for employees to have a voice that is heard.

– Communication:  Everyone can improve communication with their employees.  Today access to information is just as important as the action of communication.

– Personal Growth:  Companies today not only provide a classroom styled training but believes in creating opportunities for each individual professional.

If you are interested in continued education consider watching a 22@Noon on Facebook Live event or attend a Business B4 Hours.  These are accessible by all business and a great way to get yourself and employees engaged.  Learn more by visiting here.

The new terminal broke ground in April and here is a progress update.

The Cheyenne Regional Airport has been in the process of building the new terminal. The site has asphalt and landscaping in place. The apron for the airplanes according to Jim Schell is near its finish. It is built to hold a 737 aircraft and two regional sized aircrafts. The parking completed on the south portion of the land will hold 68 vehicles.

The 26.5 thousand square foot terminal is being mindful of modern security needs with its layout. It is going to be conducive to both airport users and the public use.

Additionally, the terminal will be available for commercial tenants. The restaurant RFQ will be sent out in the near future to find an operator, it is nice because the public will be able to enjoy the restaurant.

The structual steel will erect in October and will be dried-in by December. This means it will be protected from the weather and closed in. It is tentatively scheduled to open at the end of July 2018.

Elected Officials Mastering Social Media for Political Gain

$

Will the politician who masters social media win the race?

There was a time when issues and questions were answered in a daily editorial in the local newspaper. Now we have elected officials at all levels of government utilizing social media and other online platforms as their “soap box” to get the word out. This methodology has even replaced a press conference when addressing constituents questions and concerns. The “sources” are publishing their own thoughts, content and information and they are controlling the message directly.

With the recent announcement of Mary Throne as a candidate for Governor, another election cycle is about to begin.

It makes voters wonder, “What will we witness during this next election?”

Recall this last mayoral election in Cheyenne. Mayor Orr ran a campaign completely on social media, along with her face to face interactions with community members; all of which was documented and posted online for mass distribution and exposure with Facebook. Cheyenne City Councilman, Dicky Shanor, posts content on his Facebook page addressing questions one by one and is constantly using twitter to keep community members and “followers” informed. Even the current President uses the 140 characters to bypass the traditional methods of the media. Therefore the question is, what is next?
