One of WHP’s Four Legged Finest Retires

August 1st, 2017 marked the retirement of Wyoming Highway Patrol K-9 Basil after nine years of service with Patrol. Basil was assigned to Trooper Barry Tippy in the Rock Springs, Wyoming area. Trooper Tippy and Basil started their partnership in the fall of 2008.

During the course of Basil’s career, he was deployed 473 times and sniffed out:

  • 4 pounds of Marijuana
  • 122 grams of Cocaine
  • 8 grams of Methamphetamine
  • 93 grams of Heroin
  • 5 grams of other illegal narcotics

Basil was also responsible for finding 12 guns that were used in the commission of drug trafficking and helped confiscate $401,985 in currency.

K-9 Basil loved being petted and getting all of the attention when he attended special events around the state. Basil will now spend the rest of his time chasing tennis balls, lying around and enjoying a well deserved retirement. Trooper Tippy has also taken on a new duty with the Highway Patrol. He has been assigned to be the new K-9 coordinator for the agency.

The Wyoming Highway Patrol currently has 10 narcotic and two explosive detection dogs across the state.

Cheyenne to be the 1st city in Wyoming to be named a Purple Heart City.

Many members from the community, including retired military members, active military and a purple heart recipient expressed their support and gave thanks to the city council in considering the declaration and proclamation of August 7 as Purple Heart Day and the City of Cheyenne to be a Purple Heart City.

A couple of comments included: Larry Barttelbort – Wyoming Veterans Commission Director, soon to retire said, this about Cheyenne, “It’s very fitting that Cheyenne lead the way.”

Peter Howard said, “We often use the word veteran as a feel good measure, but all to often we think about veterans as a concept instead of individuals. Please consider these individuals in roles of leadership.”

The motion passed unanimously and proved that Cheyenne, WY is a leader and that the members of this community will continue to support our military, both active and retired.

You can watch the comments and discussion below.

CPD Foot Pursuit of Handcuffed Suspect Results in Arrest of Suspect and the Short Lockdown of East High School

On September 1, 2017 at approximately 10:53 a.m., Officers of the Cheyenne Police Department responded to the area of the 3300 block of Ridge Road for a report of domestic violence. During their investigation, Officers determined the suspect to be 24 year old Deion Davis. Officers also determined Davis had 4 warrants out for his arrest prior to attempting to contact him.

Officers went to 3801 Grove dr. in search of Davis. Officers found Davis attempting to flee through a side window of the house. Davis went back into the house and attempted to escape and resist officers. A Taser was used on Davis and he was placed into custody.
While Officers were escorting the handcuffed Davis to the police car for transport to jail, Davis was able to pull away from Officers and flee on foot. The foot pursuit took officers to 3901 Ridge Rd. where Davis was taken back into custody.

Davis was arrested for three (3) failure to comply warrants, one (1) failure to appear warrant, family violence, and escape from official detention.

During the course of the foot pursuit, School Resource Officer (SRO) located at East High School recommended the school go into lockdown for the safety of the students due to the close proximity to the incident. The lockdown lasted less than 10 minutes.
There were no injuries to the suspect, officers, or students during the incident. This incident remains under investigation.

Human Trafficking Awareness Through Artwork

Zonta of Cheyenne Seeks Entries for Fourth Annual Art Contest

Zonta of Cheyenne is seeking entries for its fourth annual art contest to raise awareness about human trafficking in the Laramie County area.  Entries must be submitted no later than Dec. 22, 2017 by 5 p.m.

The theme of this year’s contest is Human Trafficking:It’s in YOUR hometown! See it to STOP it!  Art in any medium is welcome including, but not limited to textiles, photographs, paintings, sculptures, tattoo, or drawings.  Three cash prizes of $200 each are being offered: one for the youth category for artists age 17 or younger, one for the adult category of artists 18 and older, and the third for People’s Choice Award.

“Zonta began this art contest as part of its ongoing efforts to raise awareness about human trafficking in the Laramie County area.  We believe it is a hidden evil in our community that will not be stopped unless and until we start to discuss it frankly and openly,” said, Jaime Davis, president of the Zonta Club of Cheyenne. “As the number of art entries grows each year and more artists offer expressions and interpretations of this horrific offense, more awareness opportunities are created.  Awareness is the first step to eliminating this terrible crime. Rather than turning away from this difficult subject, we hope that local artists of all ages will help raise awareness of this serious matter by submitting a piece of art that can become a conversation starter as it is displayed during January which is Human Trafficking Awareness Month.”

Art entries will be displayed at Flydragon Art Studio at 600 West 17th Street, the entire month of January and will be featured as “Artists of the Month” for Cheyenne Art Walk where the general public can help vote for the People’s Choice Award recipient.  A reception for the artists, their friends and families, and the general public will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2018 from 5 to 8 p.m.  Meanwhile, art entries may be submitted at Flydragon Art Studio at 600 West 17th Street no later than Dec 22, 2017.  Entries must include the artist’s name, phone number and email address.

Local Woodshop Owner creates Military Coin holder for Joan Jett

Joan Jett – Long term military supporter receives special gift!

Owner of Woodshop Specialties, LLC, Jamie Fowler, custom built an American Flag Military Challenge Coin Display, that was recently presented to Joan Jett, of Joan Jett & the Blackhearts. Jamie was contacted by Rod Hottle, formerly the project director for the Armed Forces Entertainment Network, and long time friend of Joan Jett.

This project was presented as a special thanks to Joan Jett for all her support of our military members. She has entertained as part of the USO and Armed Forces Entertainment. Joan is an environmentalist, and having the display made from materials that didn’t have to be cut down just to make it was important. Rod mentioned making it out of the beetle-kill, and knew that Jamie was the guy to build it. Of course, it looked great even without the stain on it. However, after putting on the stain, the blues and grays of the wood really came to light.

Jamie stated, “When you are working on a project like this, as you are putting piece after piece together and watching it all become a completed project, there were times you stand back and look at it and smile,’yep, this is going to look nice’!” He finished by saying, “It really was an honor to be asked, and then have it presented to her.”

Rod told Jamie that when he gave it to Joan, he described it best as, “She stood there in awe and just looked at it.” Rod then told Joan that he (Jamie) was out in the area. She then said she wanted to meet him and thank him personally. Jamie was then able to go into the staging trailer and sit with her for a while before her concert. While visiting, she mentioned that she was presented with an actual letter signed by Abraham Lincoln from another entertainer and wants to display this new coin holder right along side of the letter in her home.

Joan has a couple hundred challenge coins from all the places she has been, and what better way to display them.
